The Friend Who Came to Stay

\nA friend of mine from long ago
\nSaid “could I come to stay?”
\n“It’s only for a little while
\nAnd then I’ll go away.”
\nI should have guessed when he arrived
\nBeside a steamer trunk
\n“I cannot sleep if I’m deprived
\nOf all my favourite junk.”
\nI only have a tiny flat,
\nTwo beds, a kitchenette,
\nA bathroom, loo, rack for your hat
\nThe front porch is offset.
\nNo room for extra double beds,
\nTwo statues of three Queens,
\nA doodat with a dozen heads,
\nOr several soup tureens.
\nThat trunk belonged to Dr Who,
\nI’d be prepared to swear.
\nHe’d dip inside and something new
\nAppeared from who knows where.
\nA small Ferrari, just two seats
\nA single decker bus
\nA wildebeest, six satin sheets,
\nI didn’t make a fuss.
\nJust reached inside the yawning crate
\nTo grab a cricket bat,
\nAnd bonked the nutter on the pate —
\nHis lights went out like that.
\nHe fell inside his steamer trunk,
\nThe lid self closed and locked.
\nI’ve kept the best of all the junk
\nI hope you’re not too shocked.<\/p>\n
