In Praise of English Weather

\nIn Middlesex there’s not a lot of flooding,
\nThough other parts of England see their share,
\nAnd when the cherry trees have started budding,
\nThe scent of spring hangs heavy in the air.<\/p>\n
There aren’t too many hurricanes in Surrey,
\nA hint of one each century or so,
\nAnd ice-storms do not hit us in a hurry,
\nThough chilly days may make our noses glow.<\/p>\n
In England we have weather, not a climate,
\nOur scenery can change from day to day,
\nNo nasty spell lasts long, just sit and time it,
\nWe’d hate our weather any other way.<\/p>\n
For every winter gale or summer squall,
\nThere’s balmy days of watching bat on ball.<\/p>\n
In Manchester there’s rain on the horizon
\nBut not a monsoon any time of year
\nA lot of clouds you have to keep your eyes on
\nBut better days are always very near<\/p>\n
No choking smogs hang heavy on our cities
\nIn Birmingham or London you can breathe
\nWe’ll sun our selves in any ark that pretties
\nThe sort of spot where other nations seethe<\/p>\n
What if it’s “bloody freezing” on the beaches;
\nHead off and grab a round of fish and chips,
\nOne thing an English summer always teaches
\nIs keep a smile to fasten to your lips.<\/p>\n
For every frozen runway there are days
\nWhen you sit watching cricket through the haze.<\/p>\n
Not every house boasts air-conditioned splendour,
\nThough central heating’s de-rigour I’d say,
\nIn England consequences will attend a
\nDecision to go under-dressed today.<\/p>\n
I love a holiday that’s warm and sunny,
\nFor skiing you need snow not melting slush,
\nWe love to find our “rotten weather” funny
\nSince self congratulation makes us blush.<\/p>\n
But truth to tell our weather worth applauding,
\nIt’s not too hot, too cold or overblown.
\nThough I can’t count the days I’ve spent recording
\nThe different minor niggles that I’ve known.<\/p>\n
For every day that’s overcast and drear
