{"id":5356,"date":"2023-11-26T20:25:32","date_gmt":"2023-11-26T20:25:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=5356"},"modified":"2023-11-28T22:45:34","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T22:45:34","slug":"matildas-aunt-a-cautionary-tale-retold","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/m-poems\/matildas-aunt-a-cautionary-tale-retold\/","title":{"rendered":"Matilda\\&#8217;s Aunt, -A Cautionary Tale Retold-"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> Matilda&#8217;s Aunt, (A Cautionary Tale Retold)<br \/>\nby cricketjeff on May 20, 2012.\u00a0 \u00a9 Jeff Green, All rights reserved<\/p>\n<p>MATILDA&#8217;s aunt was such a bore<br \/>\nIt made one yawn and gnaw the floor,<br \/>\nShe worshipped truth to n-th degree<br \/>\nWhich brought Matilda misery.<br \/>\nThe few small lies she loved to tell<br \/>\nWere all that kept her from the Hell,<br \/>\nOf maiden aunts and West End plays<br \/>\nWhich seemed to last for days and days.<\/p>\n<p>Matilda loved both men and boys,<br \/>\nHer aunt ignored such earthly joys<br \/>\nAnd felt Matilda should stay chaste<br \/>\nUntil her charms had gone to waste.<br \/>\nHer niece was not the least inclined<br \/>\nTo see her chances undermined<br \/>\nAnd so began a short campaign<br \/>\nTo find a man to ease her strain.<\/p>\n<p>The Fire Brigade, you may recall,<br \/>\nRecruited men who were not small.<br \/>\nIn uniforms the like of which<br \/>\nHave caused most female hearts to twitch;<br \/>\nPerhaps, she thought, if brave young men<br \/>\nWould call, her Aunt would think again.<br \/>\nAnd so she hurried to the phone<br \/>\nThe moment she was left alone.<\/p>\n<p>She dialled with care, then screamed, with force,<br \/>\n&#8220;We&#8217;re doomed to die!&#8221;, it worked of course.<br \/>\nWithin the hour, or maybe two<br \/>\nThree dozen firemen formed a queue.<br \/>\nWith hoses poised and axes high<br \/>\nThese heroes let their passions fly!<br \/>\nThey soaked and smashed, they&#8217;d lives to save<br \/>\nAll well built men, so strong and brave.<\/p>\n<p>Matilda&#8217;s Aunt was unimpressed,<br \/>\nHer niece&#8217;s motives stayed unblessed.<br \/>\nInsurance meant there was no loss<br \/>\nBut still her Aunt was very cross<br \/>\nAnd when her ire had been expounded<br \/>\nShe told Matilda she was grounded,<br \/>\nNo Friday nights, no telephone,<br \/>\nShe&#8217;d have to spend a week alone.<br \/>\nSo when next day a fire took hold<br \/>\nMatilda did as she was told.<\/p>\n<p>She would not touch the phone despite<br \/>\nThe flames that shot into the night<br \/>\nAnd would not leave the house for fear<br \/>\nHer angry Aunt was waiting near<br \/>\nTo see Matilda disobey<br \/>\nAnd take more liberties away.<br \/>\nShe tried to shout but not one word<br \/>\nOf her distress was ever heard;<br \/>\nHer heartfelt pleas completely blocked<br \/>\nBy double glazing, doubly locked.<\/p>\n<p>Matilda&#8217;s Aunt came home that night<br \/>\nTo find a most distressing sight;<br \/>\nThe embers of her smouldering pile<br \/>\nHad not been house shaped for a while<br \/>\nAnd underneath the tragic crash<br \/>\nMatilda was reduced to ash.<br \/>\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re an Aunt you should take heed<br \/>\nAnd not repeat this dreadful deed &#8212;<br \/>\nA few white lies are not as bad<br \/>\nAs niece flamb\u00e9ed inside your pad!<\/p>\n<p> Author notes<br \/>\nI have attempted to use Belloc&#8217;s own formatting but Kevin&#8217;s site doesn&#8217;t think<br \/>\nI should so I have to put some plain text at the top to stop him wrecking<br \/>\neverything!<\/p>\n<p>MATILDA<br \/>\nWHO TOLD LIES, AND WAS BURNED TO DEATH<br \/>\nby: Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953)<\/p>\n<p>MATILDA told such Dreadful Lies,<br \/>\nIt made one Gasp and Stretch one&#8217;s Eyes;<br \/>\nHer Aunt, who, from her Earliest Youth,<br \/>\nHad kept a Strict Regard for Truth,<br \/>\nAttempted to Believe Matilda:<br \/>\nThe effort very nearly killed her,<br \/>\nAnd would have done so, had not She<br \/>\nDiscovered this Infirmity.<br \/>\nFor once, towards the Close of Day,<br \/>\nMatilda, growing tired of play,<br \/>\nAnd finding she was left alone,<br \/>\nWent tiptoe to the Telephone<br \/>\nAnd summoned the Immediate Aid<br \/>\nOf London&#8217;s Noble Fire-Brigade.<br \/>\nWithin an hour the Gallant Band<br \/>\nWere pouring in on every hand,<br \/>\nFrom Putney, Hackney Downs, and Bow.<br \/>\nWith Courage high and Hearts a-glow,<br \/>\nThey galloped, roaring through the Town,<br \/>\n&#8216;Matilda&#8217;s House is Burning Down!&#8217;<br \/>\nInspired by British Cheers and Loud<br \/>\nProceeding from the Frenzied Crowd,<br \/>\nThey ran their ladders through a score<br \/>\nOf windows on the Ball Room Floor;<br \/>\nAnd took Peculiar Pains to Souse<br \/>\nThe Pictures up and down the House,<br \/>\nUntil Matilda&#8217;s Aunt succeeded<br \/>\nIn showing them they were not needed;<br \/>\nAnd even then she had to pay<br \/>\nTo get the Men to go away!<\/p>\n<p>It happened that a few Weeks later<br \/>\nHer Aunt was off to the Theatre<br \/>\nTo see that Interesting Play<br \/>\nThe Second Mrs. Tanqueray.<br \/>\nShe had refused to take her Niece<br \/>\nTo hear this Entertaining Piece:<br \/>\nA Deprivation Just and Wise<br \/>\nTo Punish her for Telling Lies.<br \/>\nThat Night a Fire did break out&#8211;<br \/>\nYou should have heard Matilda Shout!<br \/>\nYou should have heard her Scream and Bawl,<br \/>\nAnd throw the window up and call<br \/>\nTo People passing in the Street&#8211;<br \/>\n(The rapidly increasing Heat<br \/>\nEncouraging her to obtain<br \/>\nTheir confidence) &#8212; but all in vain!<br \/>\nFor every time she shouted &#8216;Fire!&#8217;<br \/>\nThey only answered &#8216;Little Liar!&#8217;<br \/>\nAnd therefore when her Aunt returned,<br \/>\nMatilda, and the House, were Burned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Matilda&#8221;
