\nThere are those who see for certain the unerring hand of god
\nIn everything that’s marvellous, or wonderful, or odd;
\nIn the soaring of an eagle, in the singing of a lark,
\nIn the colours of aurorae that redecorate the dark.
\nThey salute the perfect artist as they gaze upon each work
\nBut are silent when observing other mysteries that lurk.
\nIf a god made every dragonfly did he make smallpox too?
\nIf he gilded every sunset did he spread the Spanish flu?
\nDid one hand design ebola and malaria parasites
\nIf there’s no evolution what made boomslangs’ lethal bites?
\nThere are several strains of fungus that rewire their victims brains
\nCan you feel eternal mercy in a dying zombie’s pains?
\nWhen a child is saved from fever, “it’s a miracle” some say;
\nDid the god who saved your first-born kill ten thousand more next day?
\nDon’t just look at smiling roses (bred by men for many years)
\nPick a sprig of poison ivy then explain away your tears.
\nFor a garden full of flowers may be beautiful to see
\nBut it’s weeds that feed the butterflies that set that beauty free.
\nWho’s afraid of thoughts and thinking, who thinks evidence is sin,
\nIf we add to human knowledge the whole human race will win.
\nThere are great men of religion but the worst men hide there too
