{"id":5494,"date":"2023-11-26T20:25:30","date_gmt":"2023-11-26T20:25:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=5494"},"modified":"2023-11-28T23:04:46","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T23:04:46","slug":"the-great-charter","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/nicewaistcoat.com\/wordpress\/the-poems\/the-great-charter\/","title":{"rendered":"The Great Charter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> The Great Charter<br \/>\nby cricketjeff on June 15, 2015.\u00a0 \u00a9 Jeff Green, All rights reserved<\/p>\n<p>Eight hundred years ago the Magna Carta<br \/>\nWas sealed at Runnymede to end a war,<br \/>\nThe barons and the King agreed to barter<br \/>\nUnwritten rules for dignity and law.<\/p>\n<p>No longer should the mighty walk unhindered<br \/>\nAcross the rights all men were born to hold.<br \/>\nThe courts could see that flashpoints stayed untindered<br \/>\nAnd freedoms earned could not be bought for gold.<\/p>\n<p>Though Kings and Lords have tried to steer around it<br \/>\nIts simple words still give us dignity<br \/>\nIn darkest times the least of us have found it<br \/>\nAnd many times it&#8217;s set enslaved men free<\/p>\n<p>The worst of kings by murdering his knights<br \/>\nBegan the march to universal rights.<\/p>\n<p> Author notes <\/p>\n<p>Not a great sonnet, and not for judging of course!<\/p>\n<p>There isn&#8217;t really one Magna Carta, the important document that still one<br \/>\ncornerstone of English (and therefore American) common law evolved over the<br \/>\nnext few years, but 1215 saw the start of Kings not only promising to uphold<br \/>\nthe law at their coronations and then doing whatever the hell they liked, but<br \/>\nbeing held to those promises.
