Too Damned Soon!

\nIt’s far too early for Christmas verses,
\nA week’s enough to shop for friends,
\nThese Autumn carols provoke our curses
\nA once high spirit soon descends.
\nIt started well before September
\nThe jokes worn thin, it’s still November!
\nThe shops have wished our lives away
\nAnd I’ve begun to dread the \u00a0day
\nWhen Santa calls to swig my sherry
\nTo eat mince pies and have a chat
\n(He wonders why he’s grown so fat!)
\nWhen duty calls he will be “Merry”.
\nHe’ll give three “Ho!”s and hit the sky
\nRestoring hopes from sleigh on high!<\/p>\n

\nWith enormous thanks to “Black Narcissus” this poem started as a comment on his
\npiece in the same contest. I’ve revised and I hope de-roughened it a bit.<\/p>\n
I’ve never liked calling these sonnets, they lack of anything in the least bit
\nsonnetty save the line count so I’ll call this an Onegin-Stanza<\/p>\n
As many of you who have read my verses over the years will know Santa is a
\npersonal friend of mine, I’ve known him for years and he often drops by to
\nchat. He tells me he is frankly appalled by Christmas Carols well before
