Old Truths Will Stir

\nProud granite cliffs no longer cage the sea,
\nTheir cresting walls lie shattered on the sand.
\nThe fearless face of perpetuity
\nNow mocked by waves that eat away the land.
\nAt every turn we see the ruins of time,
\nRomantic wrecks that once stood tall and proud,
\nA memory of what had been sublime
\nDisguised beneath an age-corrupted shroud.
\nAnd in strong hearts old truths will always stir,
\nAs years roll by we too begin to fade,
\nMaturity’s a skilful saboteur –\u00a0
\nOur childish dreams are debts that must be paid
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 Though I know time will steal the best from me
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 I choose to live, not court eternity.<\/p>\n

\nI don’t think I’m quite happy with this yet, trying to write a sonnet on a page
\nheaded by one of Shakespeare’s finest is pretty intimidating and I have to
\naccept there’s no point competing but I think I can polish this a little.<\/p>\n

\nAdvantage on the kingdom of the shore,
\nAnd the firm soil win of the watery main,

\nWhen I have seen such interchange of state,
\nOr state itself confounded to decay;
\nRuin hath taught me thus to ruminate
\nThat Time will come and take my love away.
